West coast wander

The West coast of Scotland is magnificent. Most of the time travellers would visit famous points such as the Highlands, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the North of Scotland with Inverness and the Loch Ness. We tend to forget to advise people to visit down south of the west coast.

This article will present you some places that you can visit if you are here in Scotland for a weekend or a week visiting. These cities and places are located in South Ayrshire which is accessible from Glasgow by train or car by the M77.

Ayr

Robert Burns Cottage

Robert Burns is one the most famous Scottish poet in the entire History. The Robert Burns Cottage is located in Alloway, near Ayr.
This ancient house shows you how the poet lived during the 18th century. It is made of several rooms, one where the horses/cows used to stay and the living room, where the Burns was living. If you are lucky enough to get a guided visit, you will learn more about his life, his family, his inspiration and some other information on the actual epoch in which he lived in.

You can also visit the museum which is not far from the cottage. For more information visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum

Culzean Castle

The Culzean Castle is located south to Ayr, still on the West Coast. You can visit the inside of the Castle or walk around, visit the garden and have a wander on the beach.

This picture was taken in April 2017. I would advise any travellers to come to visit Scotland around the end of March, beginning of April. In my opinion, it is the right time where you have the biggest chances to see the sun.

The waterfront and the beach

Ayr beach in April 2017
The beach in Ayr is not very large when the tide is high, but quite long. It is a really nice place to get some fresh air, and if you are a dog lover then you need to go there. Dog walkers are often coming to the beach.

This picture was taken in April 2017, and I was enough courageous to dip my feet in the sea (I would not recommend that, you can imagine how cold it is).

Carrying on with dinner (or lunch), there is a nice place near the town centre called the Waterfront Restaurant (hard name to remember isn't it).

This bar/restaurant offers good meals for decent prices. It gives a view on the river, and you can even enjoy the terrace if the weather is not too bad.

Barassie and Irvine

There is a walk along the beach you can do if you feel quite adventurous. It is really simple: start on the beach in Barassie and carry on until you reach Irvine. It will take you approximately 2 hours  and a half. It is really nice way to discover the west coast and admire the sea. Just make sure you don't disturb golfers when walking near the Kilmarnock Golf Course and never cross the field when they are playing.

 The Niche Restaurant

If you are looking for a good and affordable place to get food in Irvine, I would recommend you the Niche Restaurant. It is a tiny and warm restaurant that is very cosy and romantic. When you are inside, it feels very private and enjoyable as it is not busy as a Wetherspoons could be.

The restaurant does really good burgers and coffees. The first time I visited the place was after the long walk along the beach. It was adorable to be able to grab a coffee and get some warmth after spending a long time outside in the cold.
